Australian Bush-turkey (Alectura lathami)

The Australian Bush-turkey is a Megapode or mound-builder common in coastal Eastern Australia from Sydney are northwards. Megapodes make a large mound of vegetation, effectively a compost heap, which they carefully manage in which they lay and incubate their eggs. Chicks hatch from their eggs fully formed, have to dig their way out and then have to fend for themselves! This species is often encountered in parks, large gardens, picnic areas and campsites, where they become quite tame.
