Australian king parrot (Alisterus scapularis)

The Australian king parrot is found in coastal and heavy forest in southeastern Australia. A separate population is found in upland forests of the wet tropics of north Queensland.  This lovely bird is resident in older parts of Canberra, where these birds were filmed.   In winter, numbers increase as birds come into town from the surrounding mountains to feed on fruits of native and introduced trees.  When feeding in the city they are quite tame.  Both sexes are shown, the male has the bright red head.
