The Brown treecreeper is found over a wide area of eastern Australia from southeast SA to northern Queensland. It is more often encountered inland and is probably declining close to settled and more coastal locations. Compared to other Australian treecreepers that occur in this region this species can often be found on the ground. In the Canberra region it is present in low numbers in grassy woodland habitats. An environment with lots of fallen timber and similar detritus seems to be beneficial for this species.
