Red-tailed Black Cockatoo (Calyptorrhynchus banksii)

The Red tailed Black Cockatoo is a magificent bird found across many parts of Australia. It is common in Northern Australia. In central and southern Australia there are three isolated subspecies.

Forest red-tailed Cockatoo (ssp. naso) of the far SW of Western Australia. In winter these birds wander and may be found in Perth suburbs, where these birds were filmed.

‘Inland’ subspecies (spp. samueli) which consists of several populations found across the centre of the continent. The birds shown here belong to the isolated population that lives along the Darling River in northern NSW.  Filmed on a busy roadside on just outside the town of Bourke. Birds with solid red tail panels are males.
