Southern Emu-wren (Stipiturus malachurus)

The Southern Emu-wren is an elusive, shy inhabitant of coastal heathland in southern Australia from southeast Queensland to eastern South Australia. Also found in coastal southwest WA and more generally in Tasmania. What you see here is a typical experience of this amazing little bird as it moves in, around and through the impenetrable bush in which it lives. A reluctant weak flier, it normally hops and runs about. The amazing long tail of spare feathers is a feature of these difficult to observe birds.
Filmed in coastal heathland in southern Victoria.
